The Ludwig Supraphonic – Ludwig's work horse drum still kicking.

supposedly the most recorded drum of all time... from my point of view definitely the most copied. You only have top look at most metal shell offerings from all the major companies today to see the influence of the ludwig supraphonic – the good news is literally hundreds of thousands were made and are still being made today. The first supraphonics turned up in catalogs in the late 50's but were called super ludwigs, early 60's drums were made from brass and are highly sought after by collectors – after 1964 serial numbers appeared and the shells were change to an alloy called ludalloy. There are many 14x5" drums around and a goodly number of 14x6.5" drums but the later are harder to find for a reasonable amount due to the John Bonham connection. Many supras suffer from a condition called supra acne (pitting)– chrome doesn't adhere well to aluminum so under certain conditions it begins to peel. Sound wise you can't beat em (no pun intended) and they are used by many professionals around the world and first choice of many studios as well. The drum pictured is the LM402 model Supraphonic 14x6.5" from the 70's, note the 'reliable plating process' sticker Very Happy

beautiful mate - this drum is a must for the working drummers snare arsenal as they are so versatile in sound. Premier seems like they tried to copy these with the 2000 series (which are also really good too)

there are many good drums out there, some other work horses include: pearls free floating brass drum, any yamaha pro line snare, numerous tama models etc. It's just that nothing has the sound of a well tuned supra Smile
