Your Kit(s)? DRUM PORN!!!

Post  Charlie on Wed May 21, 2008 8:34 pm

Hi Again...my first kit was a good old Export 5 piece in Rock sizes...Why? Because the owner of them was happy to do a swap for my guitars.
About a years ago I flicked that off and got a great deal on a Mapex M Birch which I love.
It's so much more versatile than the Pearl, with a 20" kick and 8", 10" 12" 14" & 16" toms I've got lots of choices with the configuration and it sounds a million bucks!
I've added a couple of older photos that don't include my latest 8" 2oo2 splash or any of my traps (mounted tambourine and wood block) though you can see the cowbell tucked in there.
My current full set up is in my avitar >>> over there!
What do you play and why?
Come on...put up some picks of your kit...we want DRUM PORN!!!
Cheers!

Hi Charlie

mine also is a Mapex M Birch 6 piece - in Transparent Honey Amber, bought late last year.

I play Mapex because they produce fantastic kits which sound good and look good, and don't cost lots and lots of money.

Hi guys, welcome to the forum. I am a self confessed gear head and have a number of kits but at the moment.
Yamaha 9000 Recording in black laquer 22,16,14,13,12,10 with Ludwig black beauty snare it's hard to fault the sound of this kit.

Hi Admin, I bet that Black Beauty is awesome! What depth is it?
I've just finished restoring a Gretsch COB that I got off TradeMe. My 3rd Gretsch. But I haven't even been able to fine tune it yet coz my snare stand is set up at a gig till after the weekend.
It's killing me, I'm such an impatient bastard!

The BB i'm using at the moment is 14x6.5" 70's engraved supersensitive, I also have a 14x5" 79 BB which is bronze Both drums are amazing sounding instruments.

Was that the gretsch that was listed on trademe about 2 weeks ago? Nice snag I can understand you wanting to get some play time on that puppy!

Very Nice Ludwigs Sir!
I'd been looking at both those models on Ebay when that Gretsch came up on TradeMe and I couldn't resist as I already have a 10 ply maple and a 10x5 chrome Gretsch and it seemed like a perfect compliment.
It was probably 3 weeks ago it came up so I'm guessing that's the one you saw.
I scored an original damper for it from the States and some nylon tension rod washers and cleaned and polished the whole thing 3 times before re-assembling it.
It looks great...hopefully it sounds the same!

That Gretsch snare is stunning, good work man. I saw it on trademe too. If it sounds anything like it looks, phwoar!

At the moment I'm playing on a Roland TD8 and doing covers gigs in Wellington. Waiting on a Gretsch Renown maple, with 7x8", 8x10, 12x9 and 14x14" toms. I'm still trying to decide between a 20x16" and 22x20" kick. The former will fit on smaller stages and be good for gigging around town, and the 22x20" sounds like rolling thunder.

Ignarukih, you're gonna be blown away by that Renown Maple.
I hear they're the Dingo's Danglies!
I did import a Renown Maple snare last year along a black chrome one, both of which I sold to pay for the 10 ply maple one I kept.
I think the colour was called "Autumn Burst", it was gorgeous. Silver sealer on the inside, 10 double lugs, cast hoops...Yummy! That was just the snare....
Do the toms have cast or flanged hoops? I know the shells are fantastic! What colour are you getting?
I'm pretty sure you could get an awesome sound out of a 20' kick if you played with the tuning and damping?
I really like a 20" kick coz it allows me to get over the toms a bit more...just me.
We wanna see pics when you get it!
Cheers...

This is the one that's on its way. Cherry burst all the way, autumn burst looks great but my preference is the deep red. I'll get a different snare though (probably a cast bronze).

From what I've heard, I do expect the Renown to blow me away - I tried the Catalina Maple in Wgtn Rockshop and that was impressive enough even without the silver sealer and everything. After seeing this video on Youtube I was totally sold.
Renowns come standard with die cast hoops all round.

I guess having 8x7" and 10x8" as my only rack toms, I can get away with bigger bass drum dimensions without having to reach too high, but I sit pretty high anyway...

Definitely will post pics when I get it.

Cast bronze snare?...Now you're just boasting!...
Good on Ya! Fantastic!

This is my old setup, but I still have the same kit. Have since gone back to a conventional Hi Hat setup. Gotta love those Weta snares, right Mark?
