What are you listening to at the moment?

Post  Charlie on Thu May 22, 2008 11:58 pm

Not an original topic for a thread but a goody!

I've got Weather Report's classic "Heavy Weather" blearing in my office...

Did you know Jaco plays drums on the 3rd track Teen Town....clever bastard he was!

I'm listening to a lot of old tunes I grew up with like Maiden, Rollins Band, NWA, sly and robbie and some newer stuff like ari hoenig.
When i'm working I listen to a southern rock radio station on the net love that stuff!

Hey Mark, I wasn't familiar with Ari Hoenig so I checked him out on YouTube.
What a weird, stiff looking style and some of the best face pulling I've seen any drummer do, but Wow what a touch and sensitivity. Beautiful!
Thanks for the hint, I'm gonna track down more of him!

Yeah, he's a funny looking guy huh? But man he can play! I really like the contrast of his ride cymbals - an old 50's A zildjian 22" and a 20" Meinl Dragon ride. He also plays a 16" kick which sits really well in the mix.

I've been listening to pretty much everything at the moment. The bands getting the most thrashing though are Steely Dan, Tower Of Power, Devil Driver, Lamb of God and any of Dave Weckl's albums - a little bit of a mixture going on there.

Im really into Thomas Pridgen's playing at the moment. He took over from John Theodore in the Mars Volta, and is on their most recent album "Bedlam In Goliath". Phenomenal player, especially a such a young age! Check this out......

http://nz.youtube.com/watch?v=BH11YFqMoB0

Also, anything with Tony Williams playing on it, especially with Miles in the 60s, the Lifetime band in the 70s, and his own quintet in the 80s.

Other Favourites.......Danny Carey, Billy Cobham, Josh Freese, Jimmy Chamberlin, Jack Dejohnette

This is great! What a variety of stuff you guys are listening to!
Thomas Pridgen rocks...great stuff! Thanks for the link Mr Williams!
I've always been a big Billy Cobham fan along with Jack DeJonette more recently.
Steely Dan always do it for me...Steve Gadd is always so very musical in their older stuff...required listening!
My daughter's boyfriend introduced me to the drumming of Chris Adler, Wow! Not the kind of music that I aspire to playing but I can sure admire his ability and versatility. I've got the Modern Drummer DVD of him and Jason Bittner at their festival in '05. Great thoughts and drum philosophy too...he's really thought about his approach and I was surprised at how articulate he is. One should not judge a book by it's cover!
Some of the other names I'm familiar with some not, so there's an opportunity to expand my listening library...thanks guys!
On the way to work I was listening to Return to Forever, "Romantic Warrior" and was surprised at how horrible Lenny White's deepest tom sounds on the first track...I'd never noticed before but it sounds like a baggy, uncoated head with no reso' Yuk! and quite out of place with his other toms when he rolls around the kit...BUT he's Lenny White and what do I know?

Heres a great clip of Billy Cobham with George Duke performing Rush Hour. His solo over the vamp in 5/4 is incredible. Great bass player aswell, cant figure out who he is though. I love his snare sound.

Fantastic, absolutely brilliant, thanks for that link Mr Williams, great way to start the day!
Billy Cobham always makes it look so easy, just having fun!
The bass player is Larry Kimpel, never heard of him but he's no slouch!
Thanks.

Thomas Pridgen is ridiculous. Here vs. Tony Royster Jr who's also not too shabby. It all starts around the 0:40 mark. I've got some practicing to do...

Also, Chris Pennie (ex-The Dillinger Escape Plan, currently... <ahem>)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=TG-LJVVQpDI

...and Gil Sharone (currently in The Dillinger Escape Plan and goth-ska curios Stolen Babies)

Finally this kid. Seven years old. What?! How?!

Hi Bryan, welcome to the forum!
The pics of your kit are fantastic. That wrap is absolutely beautiful under lights!
Thanks for sharing!
Your full set-up is similar in config' to my own.
Very nice indeed!

I'm now listening to a LOT of Iron Maiden. I play in a Maiden-Tribute band affectionately named "Coffin With Spikes", and we have just booked an Auckland show for Halloween. Got about 14 songs to learn/re-learn - one of them being 13 1/2 minutes long! haha

"Coffin with Spike's" are you guys Monty Python fans or was this just a description of an Iron Maiden...?

Sounds like a challenging gig! Good luck!

Lately it's been a whole lot of:

Melvins - Stag, Stoner Witch, A Senile Animal, Houdini
Mastodon - Leviathan, Remission
Dillinger Escape Plan - Ire Works
Boris - Pink, Smile
Neurosis - Given to the Rising, Eye of Every Storm.

Study music. Cool

Pat Metheny...

Post  Charlie on Tue Jun 17, 2008 10:44 pm

Having discovered I was a fan and appreciated Pat Metheny, a woman I was trading with on TradeMe sent me a CD of Mp3's of his work. Many of which I didn't have.
16 albums of absolute bliss!
Paul Wertico is a machine and his use of cymbals is brilliant! Almost melodic!

I vaguely remember "Master and the Musician" being Phil's answer to Jeff Beck's "There and Back" (Am I allowed to mention that album AGAIN?)
Huge dynamics between tracks, very different sounds and feels, quite experimental...it was great stuff...got him the cover article in Guitar Player or similar magazine at the time.
I bet his recent stuff is amazing with another 25 years of playing under his belt.
Who drums for him?
