Cheap as chips drum mic sets on TM

Post  echo on Sat Dec 04, 2010 10:00 pm

Hi, i'm sure some of you guys have had reasonable recording experience. I want to do some recording, but not professionally. Does anyone know if the CAD DMTP-4 drum mics on trademe are worth the boxes they come in? Here's a link to an auction:

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=335531109

Has anyone you know played around with these?

Cheers

Its amazing what you can get for three hundred dollars. Thats less than 100 bucks each so I wouldn't expect miracles from them. CAD do seem to have a good reputation though. You'll want to add a pair of condensers for overheads though. Oktava MC 012 s are a good choice for not to much dosh or CADs m179 would probably be an option.

Thanks for the reply, belltone. CAD do have a similar 7 piece pack which includes two condenser overheads, though i'm not sure if STL audio stocks that pack or how much it's worth. Guess for starting out you gotta factor in $ for cables, mixer, software, etc, etc. I'm pretty keen record some noise though. A buddy has a four track to play around with over xmas break. Any further advise would be most welcome.

Was lucky enough to get a set of AKG's for a great price I don't know
much about mics but used them at a gig saturday and they sounded good...

Ended up using 3 audix f10s and an f12, and a studio projects B1 as a condenser. Couldn't make the toms sound good so used all the dynamics on the snare, hihat and bass, B1 picked up toms and cymbals pretty good. SM58 in front of guitar amp. Learnt a lot, made some sounds which are pretty reasonable for dumbarse amatuers. Next ones gonna be better. Onward and upward.

Smile cool youve done it,youve learnt from the experience,no longer an amateur ,you now ahead of most , And Upwards.
so many many drummers could a lot from having there drums and themselves recorded at a high level,i think its a great investment for any drummer.
