That's gorgeous Mark!
Really nice work, I can't imagine what goes into creating such a work of art?
How about a post or even a new thread that goes into the intracasies of snare manufacture. We've all probably seen the larger manufacturer's web tours explaining how they make laminated snare and tom shells but I've not seen anything about brass or steel shells, or chrome (steel) over brass for that matter.
I, for one, would be really interested Mark!
How about it?
Cheers!

Cheers mate. I do most custom work on the wood shell drums - I do not however make my own brass shells - like almost every other company I out source them as the tooling required for making these drum is extensive and not cost effective for a market as small as New Zealand. I use a supplier of Brass, Stainless, aluminium and cast bronze drum shells which furnishes me with undrilled shells which I can customize to a customers specific wants. I did find this video though, so you can see what goes into a metal shell.

What a process!
I can see why you out source them Mark, that production line must cost millions to set up and it's still pretty labour intensive with all the cleaning and polishing.
It gives a little insight into why a good snare is so freakin' expensive.
Do you use Sonor shells, the moulding around the centre looks similar?
Thanks for that..very interesting!

Yeah, it's mind numbing to watch. I don't use Sonor shells - but if I did the drum wouldn't be $500! ha ha more like $1500. If anyone is interested I also have a 14x6.5" black brass with chrome hardware and die-cast hoops.

That snare looks very sexy mark - what sort of sound does that give?

Cheers man, it's a bright sounding drum with plenty of top end crack but lots of tone and the warmth of brass. Very versatile and sensitive like a black beauty.
