Snare drum ring

Post  paradd on Sat Jan 19, 2013 3:39 am

Hi,
I am playing around with a new 6.5" GMS Super vintage snare with 45 degree bottom bearing edge and rounded top bearing edge. It was supplied with an Evans G1 top head. The sound with that was very ordinary so have put some Puresound snares on and an Evans EC snare head. Very nice sound BUT the drum has a ring that even a sound control ring does not control sufficiently. I have traditionally used Remo heads in the past and my next step would be to try it with a Powerstroke 3.
Before I try that I would welcome any advice on controlling the ring. Cheeeeeers,,,,,,,,,

So anyway, while most were away on holiday I have put a Powerstroke 3 on. Much better control of the ring when 1 square of Moongel was added just inside the sound control ring but the overall sound was not quite as nice. I dont think Evans heads like me but I would still welcome any thoughts. Cheeers,,,,,,

Hi Alan, sorry for late reply. I have a Zildjian Noble & Cooley that has an insane amount of
ring to it. I couldn't even tame it with a coated powerstroke. The best head to tame it I have
found is a Aquarian Focus X.

Mine has the power dot – it certainly works on a very ringy snare...

Thanks for that Mark. I got one without the dot but with one square of moongel the sound is really good with minimal ring.

snare drum batter head

Post  oliverdrumsnz on Sun Apr 14, 2013 8:26 am

A good choice for a snare drum batter head to cut out ring is the Evans Genera Dry. I have had good results with my stave snare drums and this drum head. The Evans Power Centre is also good but the Genera Dry removes more ring and overtones and still plays well.
