Italian tea towels!

Post  paradd on Sat Jan 19, 2013 6:48 pm

I have had a couple of discussions with orchestral players recently who put tea towels on the top of snare drums to "control the sound"! Apparently Italian linen is the best!! Whats it all about!!! A beautiful, and expensive drum and its not allowed to "sing"!!!! Please excuse the exclaimations but I just do not get it!!!!! Cheeers!!!!!!

I've used one when recording recently, although I'm not sure it was Italian, probably Chinese. You don't get the best out of the drum but it does give a nice pillowy, muffled sound that can suit some songs. Here's a link to the track http://goldencurtain.bandcamp.com/track/tumbleweed

The snare is a 70s Acrolite and the whole kit was recorded using 2 SM58s.

Thats a nice recording Andrew. I understand towels for recording and I can remember using one in the Masonic at Devonport (small room , loud band, bar manager stationed right in front of band), but I don't understand in an orchestral back line in live performance at a big venue with a full orchestra??

Used to place one of those silencers on the corner of my pearl snare to muffle it a bit. Sounds way better, but then it is a cheap as fark snare so I don't mind doing it.

Latest discussion with the orchestral players, they have moved from tea towels to bits of lycra (not sure if they are bike riders as well). Its lighter than a towel!
