7 and 1/2" bongo head

Post  paradd on Fri Jun 20, 2014 5:31 am

Another long shot but the last one worked! I am looking for a 7.5" bongo head for an Ajax 60s drum mounted bongo. The hoop for the head on these is shallow unlike modern bongos. Carlton also had them but not sure whether Premier did. Cheeeers, Alan

Ajax bongo toms

Post  grunta57 on Thu Aug 07, 2014 2:43 am

Yes I have a pair too that I'm missing parts on. I will check the exact dimensions as I have a feeling some of the Evans 360 heads may fit..Mine look like 6" & 8" but will remeasure.

I have a chrome plated head retaining ring for the 8" ?set but no idea how the lugs fit (it's a smaller scale version of the conventional lugs I think.

It may also be possible to utilise Aquarian heads (Old American Vintage style) or indeed Remo Ambassador (providing they have the right size.

Hi, The Aquarian American vintage heads on go down to 12". With your chrome hoop you would need some rim clips. Cheeers.

Hi again Alan
yes mine are the same as yours in fact 1960's Ajax bongo type drums 7.5" and 6"..

I went to the music store yesterday and they told me I might have to run with bongo skins but the retaining thingies may need to be modified..

I'm pretty sure the old ones will have been calfskin as my 16" floor tom is and that had rotted out completely..

Let me know how you are getting on sourcing stuff..

I have been in touch with a guy in London? who deals part-time in vintage drums he might be worth a call..I will see if I can get his name and contact details for you

Grant

Hi Grant, I looked at modern bongo heads but the profile is too deep and you would need to change the hardware which defeats the purpose of having an old set. My plan is to wait and watch..... I managed to find some 13.5" calf heads for a 13.5 x 6.25 pre-war Carlton snare on a 13.5" 50/60s Olympic a while ago just by waiting and waiting and...... What was the name of your guy in London? Mind you that could be expensive. Are either of your heads intact? Cheeers, Alan

Hi Grant, I have taken a punt and ordered a 7.5" bongo head through this listing on e bay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Bongo-Head-7-5-Inch-/271028500953?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f1a8eb9d9

There are a couple of others including remo but this guy had the 6" as well so a good idea to match the heads.

I will let you know how it goes. Cheeers,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
