Hoops. To Swap or Not To Swap??

Post  Brennan on Thu Jul 24, 2008 5:03 am

A few drummers I have met have talked to me about upgrading the hoops on my kit from the factory ones. Im upgrading my ISS mounts to OPTI as they are sturdier (and im a hard hitter) But what will I achieve from upgrading hoops?
Any help or info on this would be great!
Oh and my kit is a pearl vision vlx (check pix in modern kit section)

Cheers

Not sure that spending lots of money on upgrading hoops will chabge the sound of the drums much. i get asked to get die-cast tom hoops on a regular basis but they are pretty expensive. I look at it like this. Die-cast hoops are very rigid and if they are true hold the tension and tuning of the drum even if you detune one lug - steel hoops have more flex so if you like de-tuning a lug or 2 on your snare to get an odd tuning they work better. Die cast hoops can sound boxy. Wood hoops are best for studio as they enhance the woody tone of the drum but would'nt have enough cut live. I am quite fussy about the height of the rim from the head so never liked pearls super hoops and tama mighty hoops.

I do have a problem with one lug on each tom (ususallythe bottom one) coming loose during each jam. But my snare has the super hoop 2's on it and has never lost its tune since stretching in the head.
Another worry for me is the mounts on my toms giving a fair amount of play when i hit them. I dont want the hoops to bend or anything and im wondering if the movement is causing the lugs to come loose?!? Hopefully the optimounts will sort it.
