DW crazy ass kick size

Post  Mark [Admin] on Mon Apr 14, 2008 11:51 pm

Well, I just heard - DW have introduced a 23" bass drum in their new catalouge! Is it destined to become as popular as the 11" tom tama marketed in the 80's?

Hmmm. DW have been coming out with some seriously hair-brained ploys lately; I don't know what they're up to. The 3-stick drumstick set comes to mind.

I can't envisage the target market for a 23" kick, myself. Why not just tune a 22" down a little fatter, or a 24" up? It's one inch, I can't see it making too much of a difference, unless you have ten kicks and you tune them chromatically descending.

Bah - it's just a gimmick. Who cares about 3 sticks? Just buy another pair. The chances are if you break one of the 3 sticks, then you will have a brand new stick and a heavily chewed up stick which is probably going to be the next to break, leaving you back with only 1 stick again.

The 23" Bass Drum is just stupid. Now drumhead companies will have to start producing 23" heads in their different model lines just to support the 0.001% of the population who actually give a damm about ,and can afford, a 23" DW kick.

Also I think the whole "extra revolutions" on the thread of their tension rods is just a nuisance and could prove to be a real inconvenience. Not wanting to slag them completely though as I do think they make nice drums and hardware Surprised

yeah the 23" kick is destined to go the way of other 'great' ideas like the mirigan oval bass drum and pearl's vari-pitch snare drum which was just a snare drum with a roto=tom mounted in the top sounded like hell!

Drum Marketing Departments

Post  Wikki on Thu May 08, 2008 3:07 am

It is crazy what drum marketing departments will try and create as fads to awaken sections of the dormant drum buying public. I can just imagine nervous owners of 22" and 24" kicks sweating over whether the 23" will really make the 22" owners more manly, or the 24" owners more sensitive.

The fact that they chose Neil Peart to endorse them pretty much lost me at 'hello' anyhow.

Cringe.

23" DW Kick

Post  DrumCity on Sun May 03, 2009 11:44 pm

The 23" kick was a custom made drum size for Neil Peart. He wanted it so he got it.
According to DW, he said the 22" was not big enough and the 24" was to big.

I think DW needed to modify their 22" shell making machines and Remo have had to start producing heads for them.

No 23" kicks have entered the country to date.

So far, the only thing i have asked for from DW that they could not do was a 6" drum. But they did make us an 8" with a double thick shell to pitch it up.

Hi Dan, and welcome to the forum. I can imagine Neil Peart would get any custom order he wants, the debate is about the longevity of the 23" bass drum as an option I think in 5 years it will be a distant memory... I do think it's cool that DW will look at producing any size desired though so good on them.

That's right, 23" may just take off, you never know what is around the corner in this ever changing world. Some great improvements to drums since rock and roll boosted their importance as an instrument. End of the day it is how they are played and by who. look at some of the old imperial odd sized kits the masters played, they still sounded great. Maybe that odd sizing was the secret? lol!

I could use a 21" kick drum sometimes

I believe they are releasing the 23" kicks under their PDP range of drums.
